Kalamazoo Ballet Financial Assistance

Opportunity should follow potential.

A dancer’s ability to learn, grow, and participate should not be determined solely by a family’s financial circumstances.

Kalamazoo Ballet Company helps remove financial barriers that can stand between dancers and meaningful training, performance, and artistic opportunity. Assistance may support needs ranging from regular dance education to the expenses that arise as a dancer’s training becomes more advanced.

Our Approach

Removing barriers without limiting ambition.

Financial circumstances can change. Families can face unexpected challenges. And serious dance training can create expenses far beyond the cost of a weekly class.

Our goal is to help make continued participation possible when financial need might otherwise require a dancer to step away.

Requests are considered with care, discretion, and respect for each dancer and family.
Why Assistance Matters

Sometimes the smallest barrier can change a dancer’s path.

Dance training grows with the dancer. What may begin as one class each week can develop into multiple weekly classes, pointe work, performances, company participation, auditions, and advanced training opportunities.

For some families, those growing expenses can become the difference between a dancer continuing to progress and having to step away from an opportunity they are ready for.

01

Training grows.

As dancers advance, the amount and intensity of training often increase. Financial assistance can help families sustain the consistent education that meaningful progress requires.

02

Opportunities arise.

Performances, auditions, summer programs, intensives, and other advanced opportunities can appear unexpectedly — sometimes with significant costs attached.

03

Circumstances change.

Families may encounter temporary or long-term financial changes. Assistance can provide continuity so that a difficult season does not necessarily become the end of a dancer’s training.

Kalamazoo Ballet Company exists to help ensure that financial circumstance is not the only thing deciding whether a dancer can keep learning, performing, and moving forward.

What Assistance Can Support

Support for the needs that make participation possible.

Financial barriers do not always look the same. Assistance may help with the ongoing cost of training, the equipment dancers need, participation in performances, or opportunities that become available as a dancer advances.

01

Dance Tuition

Assistance may help offset the cost of regular dance classes so dancers can maintain the consistent training appropriate to their age, level, and educational goals.

02

Pointe Shoes & Training Needs

As dancers progress, specialized equipment can become a significant recurring expense. Support may include pointe shoes and other training-related needs that are necessary for continued participation.

03

Company & Performance

Assistance may help with eligible costs connected to company participation and performance so that financial circumstances do not unnecessarily prevent a dancer from taking part.

04

Advanced Opportunities

Support may also be considered for auditions, summer intensives, residential training, and other meaningful educational or artistic opportunities that arise as a dancer’s training progresses.

Assistance is based on demonstrated need, available resources, and the charitable programs and guidelines of Kalamazoo Ballet Company. Funding may be full or partial and is not guaranteed.

Who May Apply

Assistance is intended to help dancers keep moving forward.

Kalamazoo Ballet Company considers requests from dancers and families participating in eligible training, performance, and artistic opportunities connected to its charitable mission.

Current dancers & families

Families facing financial barriers to ongoing dance education, required training needs, company participation, or performance expenses may request assistance.

Need may be ongoing or temporary. A change in employment, unexpected family expense, or sudden training opportunity may all create circumstances in which support is appropriate.

Emerging opportunities

Dancers may also be considered for support when a meaningful educational or artistic opportunity arises, including advanced training programs, auditions, intensives, or other experiences aligned with Kalamazoo Ballet Company’s mission.

Eligibility and available support may vary by program, funding, and the nature of the request.

Applicants do not need to wait until a financial situation becomes urgent. Families are encouraged to reach out when cost may affect a dancer’s ability to participate fully or pursue an appropriate opportunity.

How Awards Are Considered

Every request has its own story.

Financial assistance is considered individually rather than by a single formula. Families have different circumstances, dancers have different needs, and opportunities can carry very different costs.

Kalamazoo Ballet Company considers each request in the context of its charitable mission, available resources, and the circumstances surrounding the dancer and opportunity.

01

Financial Need

The family’s financial circumstances and the extent to which cost may prevent or limit a dancer’s ability to participate are important considerations.

02

The Nature of the Request

We consider what support is being requested, why it is needed, and how it relates to the dancer’s education, participation, performance, or artistic development.

03

The Opportunity

When assistance is requested for advanced study or a special opportunity, consideration may include the dancer’s readiness, the educational value of the experience, and its relationship to their continued development.

04

Available Resources

Awards depend on the charitable funds available at the time of the request. Kalamazoo Ballet Company may provide full assistance, partial assistance, or another level of support based on available resources.

Our Philosophy

Financial assistance is not a judgment about a family’s commitment to dance. It is one way Kalamazoo Ballet Company can help ensure that a financial barrier does not unnecessarily become an artistic one.

We aim to use available resources thoughtfully so that support can make a meaningful difference for dancers while remaining sustainable for the organization.

Awards are subject to available funding and are not guaranteed. Assistance may vary in amount and duration.
Confidentiality & Respect

Asking for help should feel safe.

Financial circumstances are personal. Kalamazoo Ballet Company approaches requests for assistance with discretion, care, and respect for every dancer and family.

Private

Information shared as part of an assistance request is treated as private and is used only as needed to evaluate and administer the request.

Respectful

Receiving assistance does not change the way a dancer is taught, included, cast, or regarded within their training environment.

Individual

Families are not expected to explain their circumstances publicly. Requests are considered individually and with sensitivity to the information provided.

A dancer should be able to accept support without feeling defined by it. Financial assistance is simply one of the ways Kalamazoo Ballet Company works to keep meaningful opportunities within reach.

How to Apply

Start with a simple request.

Families do not need to know exactly what level of assistance may be available before applying. Tell us about the dancer, the need or opportunity, and how financial support could help make participation possible.

01

Submit a Request

Complete the financial assistance application with basic information about the dancer, the support being requested, and the circumstances surrounding the request.

02

We Review It

Kalamazoo Ballet Company reviews each request individually, considering financial need, the purpose of the request, and available charitable resources.

03

We Follow Up

Families are contacted after review with the outcome of the request or if additional information would help us better understand the circumstances.

Financial Assistance Application

You are welcome to ask.

Whether the need involves ongoing training, a pair of pointe shoes, performance expenses, or an unexpected opportunity, beginning the conversation is the first step.

If an opportunity has a deadline, please include that information with your request.
Frequently Asked Questions

A few things families often want to know.

Financial situations and training needs are rarely identical. If your circumstances do not fit neatly into one of these answers, you are still welcome to submit a request.

Is there an income cutoff for financial assistance?

Not necessarily. Financial need can look different from one family to another, and a single household income number does not always tell the full story.

Requests are considered individually, taking into account the circumstances of the family, the cost of the need or opportunity, and the resources available through Kalamazoo Ballet Company.

Does assistance have to cover regular tuition?

No. Assistance may be requested for regular dance education, but it may also support pointe shoes, eligible performance or company expenses, auditions, intensives, advanced training, and other needs connected to a dancer’s artistic development.

Can an award cover the full cost?

It may. Depending on the request and available funding, assistance may cover all or a portion of an eligible expense. Award amounts are determined individually and are not guaranteed.

Will receiving assistance affect training, placement, or casting?

No. Financial assistance is separate from artistic and educational decisions. A dancer’s class placement, instruction, casting, and opportunities are based on the considerations appropriate to those decisions — not on whether the dancer receives financial support.

What if we only need help for a short period of time?

That is absolutely appropriate. Financial need may be temporary or ongoing. Families experiencing an unexpected change or a short-term difficulty are welcome to request assistance.

What if an opportunity has a deadline?

Include the deadline and any relevant dates when submitting the request. We understand that auditions, intensives, training programs, and other opportunities may require decisions on a much shorter timeline than regular tuition assistance.

Still unsure whether your situation fits? You do not need to decide that before reaching out. If cost is creating a meaningful barrier for a dancer, we encourage you to ask.

Opportunity Within Reach

A financial barrier does not have to be the end of the story.

Whether a dancer needs help continuing regular training, replacing pointe shoes, participating in a performance, or pursuing an unexpected opportunity, Kalamazoo Ballet Company exists to help make meaningful next steps possible.

If cost is affecting a dancer’s ability to participate or move forward, we encourage you to reach out.
